The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) is seeking a highly competent and experienced leader to serve as Director of Usma Family & Child Services. Based out of Port Alberni, this position is responsible for providing leadership within the NTC Usma Family and Child Services, including fostering a positive relationship with community partners. The Director of Usma Family & Child Services (FCS) will oversee the day-to-day operation of the department including the supervision of 35 staff.

Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  •  Directs and manages the day-to-day operations of child protection and family services to ensure that all activities of staff meet legislative requirements, professional standards and NTC policy criteria
  •  Provides professional guidance, clinical practice support and direction on complex child welfare issues, and ensures provincial legislative requirements and program standards, practice and procedures are adhered to by staff
  •  Makes key decisions related to the child protection and family service mandate of the Usma Program under the Child, Family and Community Service Act and its delegated authority
  •  Support team leaders to provide direction on case consultation, planning and strategies to protect children and youth and support families
  •  Developing funding proposals and writing comprehensive annual work plans
  •  Evaluates the delivery of the Usma FCS program and culturally relevant services and approaches
  •  Responsible for reporting requirements, and for the financial management of the Usma FCS program, including developing and tracking budgets

Preferred Qualifications

  •  Possess a Master’s or Bachelor of Social Work Degree preferably with 5 -10 years’ experience working with a First Nation agency and/or Provincial Children’s Services program
  •  Possess C-6 Delegation, and possess a practical knowledge of Provincial Aboriginal Operational Practice Standards and Indicators
  •  Proven ability to supervise, direct and manage within a complex organizational system
  •  Proven conflict resolutions skills and abilities in the workplace and with external contacts
  •  Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with various levels of government and the community sector in relation to child welfare issues
  •  Demonstrate strong financial management skills and abilities; to prepare annual budgets, prepare audit narratives, monitor financial reporting, generate monthly operational reports and oversee required reports for various funding sources
  •  Highly proficient in verbal and written Communication
  •  Able to promote positive partnering with communities at large, and apply effective relationship building
  •  Knowledge of Nuu-chah-nulth governance, culture protocols and traditions will be considered an asset
  •  Must be available and willing to work evenings and weekends as necessary
  •  Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  •  Provide a recent, acceptable criminal record check

Salary range: $100,000 - $125,000 (commensurate with education and experience) plus an attractive benefit package.
