Early Childhood Educator Assistant (Tlucha Child Care Centre)

Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation’s Education Department is seeking an Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA) for the Tlucha Child Care Centre. The ECEA reports to the Childcare Manager and will be part of a team that will plan and implement a culturally based child care program that is designed to give each child an opportunity to participate in experiences that will enable them to reach their full potential. The ECEA provides care for infants and preschool to school age children in a culturally based program that encourages healthy development in children's mind, body, spirit and heath. The ECEA works under the guidance of Early Childhood Educators to provide support and direct care to children. The ECE will provide nurturing care and education to young children from infancy to school age in a group setting, supporting parents through on going communication about each child’s development. The ECE will work collaboratively with other child care staff, Elders, families and children. 

Facility: Newly constructed Childcare Centre located in Tla-o-qui-aht Traditional Territory – Ty-Histanis, within the Pacific Rim National Park 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  •  Assists ECE staff in supervising and monitoring children in indoor and outdoor activities and during rest periods 
  •  Assists in planning, preparing and carrying out developmentally appropriate programs and activities
  •  Engage children in activities by telling stories, teaching songs and preparing crafts
  •  Attends to children's physical needs, which may include diapering, toileting, eating and sleeping
  •  Prepare snacks and arrange rooms or furniture for lunch and rest periods 
  • Maintains records, reports problems or concerns to ECE staff 
  • Keeps program facilities and equipment safe and clean, assist in housekeeping and cooking duties, reporting any repairs and concerns to ECE staff
  •  Performs other related duties as required 

    Qualifications 

  • Grade 12 plus completion of an early childhood education course in child guidance, child health safety or nutrition, or child development and an Early Childhood Educator Assistant Certificate
  • One to three years’ experience in a child setting and/or an Aboriginal organization or community, working with children and families
  • First Aid certification acceptable to Child Care Licensing requirements 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Class 5 or 4 Driver’s License is an asset 
  • Must provide Criminal Record Check and Drivers Abstract upon selection This position may be eligible for wage enhancement funding.
