Tseshaht hosts 500 at Island elders’ luncheon

Port Alberni

Elders from several Vancouver Island communities arrived at Maht Mahs June 26 to take part in the Island Elders’ Luncheon hosted by Tseshaht First Nation.

According to volunteer Marlene Dick, each year Tseshaht hosts the elders’ luncheon in late June because it’s the time of year that coincides with Tseshaht sockeye salmon fishery.

And the elders were treated to a very special treat, kach’as, which is fresh salmon splayed open with cedar sticks and roasted over a fire.

Vancouver Island first nations take turns hosting elders’ luncheons. It allows the elders a chance to get together and socialize with their peers.

At Maht Mahs the Tseshaht hosts served up a feast of kach’as with salads and dessert. Busloads of elders came from places as far away as Cowichan and Victoria.

Organizers Elizabeth Bill and Jane Jones rounded up plenty of donations to be used as door prizes.

Thanks to the Tseshaht community who showed up in droves to volunteer in the kitchen and in setting up the hall among other things, the elders were able to share a delicious meal and happy reconnections.
