Equipment failure causes telephone outages on west coast

Phone services were down for just over an hour yesterday in the west coast communities of Tofino, Ucluelet, Ahousaht and other outlying communities

According to Telus spokesperson Liz Sauvé, Telus began receiving reports about phone service outages in Tofino and Ucluelet at about 10 a.m. on Oct. 23. She said at first they thought it was only cellular service but later learned that home and business phone service was also down.

Telus crews arrived quickly to the Mt. Blenheim site where a Telus tower or box is located and found that their generator had failed. A back-up battery pack designed to supply power to the hub when the generator is out also failed.

Technicians have not indicated to Sauvé why both the generator and battery pack failed however, they quickly restored power to the hub shortly after 11 a.m.

There is no indication that the equipment was tampered with.
