Hupacasath First Nation and the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce are inviting the public to Victoria Quay for a very special Sunset Street Market on Canada Day, July 1.
The Sunset Street Market takes place each Wednesday evening through early September from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and features an average of 30 to 35 vendors, according to Hupacasath communications director Jolleen Dick, who has organized the market each summer since 2012.
“We held the first event last week (June 24), but this one is going to be special because it falls on Canada Day,” she said.
Dick said the market typically features one live performer, but for Canada Day, crowd favorites Marim Bam Buzz will play from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the Lance LaPointe Band following from 8 p.m. through 9 p.m. LaPointe has mostly been performing as an acoustic soloist of late, but he will have a full band behind him for this event, she added.
“And the Young Professionals of Port Alberni are setting up a beer garden on the site,” Dick said.
With the Nuu-chah-nulth Welcome Figures providing a backdrop, the market offers a wide range of artworks, crafts and jewelry produced by artisans from all over the Island, as well as cultural activities and some tasty treats.
“This week, we will have cotton candy and popcorn made right on site, and Coombs Country Candy will be here. There will also be face painting.”
Dick said one Canada Day tradition won’t be happening this year, however.
“We usually have fireworks on Canada Day, but there is a ban on fireworks this year due to the extreme fire hazard.”
Victoria Quay is located at the foot of Johnston Rd.
