Local RCMP are enforcing the No Parking bylaw on Tofino’s First Street Dock following a public complaint about the congestion.
First Street Dock is a hub at which freight is moved and is also a docking place for water taxis arriving from Hot Springs Cove, Ahousaht and Opitsaht.
There has always been a no parking rule on the dock but without enforcement, some people got into the habit of leaving their cars parked there for several hours and sometimes overnight.
In mid-June the RCMP acted on a complaint about the parking situation.
“RCMP attended the location to find the dock plugged with cars contrary to signs posted where no parking on the dock is allowed,” said Cpl. James Anderson of the Tofino RCMP.
Parking on the dock is only permitted for drop off and pickup.
“Police were also concerned because neither police nor an ambulance could access the dock should there be an emergency,” said Cpl. Anderson.
Verbal warnings and ticket warnings were issued to parking violators.
The dock parking will be monitored by the RCMP who will be towing violators should the need arise.
