Staff of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council’s Quu?asa Program were busy flipping burgers and serving up picnic food to dozens of Port Alberni’s less privileged people.
Picturesque Roger Creek Park was buzzing with activity June 18 as people lined up for burgers, hot dogs, potato salad and salmon.
Tables were set up, some piled with donated clothing that people were allowed to take. Under a canopy were two hair stylists, Myra Mack and Doreen Ryan, offering free haircuts.
Information booths were set up and resource people were on hand to provide information.
After the meal everyone took part in fun games like Pass the Parcel.
There was also a birthday cake and people joined in singing Happy Birthday to all the June babies in attendance.
Justin Dorward, Quu?asa Outreach Wellness Worker, said this is Quu?asa’s thirdannual picnic.
“These gatherings are geared toward low income people,” Dorward said, adding it’s a day for them to see what Quu?asa has to offer. “They get to see our faces and get introduced to different agencies,” said Dorward, who was pleased with the turnout.
The NTC Quu?asa staff would like to thank to Quality Foods for their generous donation of watermelons.
