Winter Challenge nomination honored for ailing man

The community has rallied around Paul Vincent who is battling cancer and on March 9 helped him honor a nomination for the 2014 Winter Challenge.

Nominated by his son, Vincent was unable to do the challenge himself because he could not take any chances and endanger his health by becoming sick before surgical treatment.

Natalie Jack devised the idea that she could do the challenge for him and thought that if she put it out on Facebook, others would join in. And sure enough, last Sunday—Paul’s birthday—more than 20 people stood at the dock waiting to go into the cold waters of Walter’s Cove. The youngest was only four years old.

Paul stood with his wife Valina as the group gathered around them and Dennis John sang the Celebration of Life Song he composed for his sister Janice when she was fighting cancer.

A message from Valina on Facebook after the event thanked their “beautiful family and friends” for their support. “Paul was so in awe at the turnout and would like to thank you all.”

Paul was quickly on his way to Victoria for his treatment. He is expected to remain there until Thursday.
