Usma Nuu-chah-nulth celebrates children

Port Alberni

The Tseshaht Longhouse was open to children and caregivers June 3 as guests of Usma’s annual celebration of children in care.

Social Worker Sandra Karlsen said the celebration is part of a week-long provincial initiative where children-in-care are recognized for their resilience and ability to overcome struggles.

“These gatherings allow kids to make connection with their families and their Nuu-chah-nulth communities,” said Karlsen.

Nuu-chah-nulth foster parents travelled from as far away as Nitinaht Lake to take part in the event.

Everyone was invited to fill up on barbecued hamburgers and hotdogs complete with potato chips, fresh fruit and drinks.

Tables were set up that allowed the children to paint, bead, weave cedar and more. Some young people played catch outside the longhouse.

Usma Director Jeff Kizuk welcomed everyone to the celebration and he thanked the foster parents, social workers and partner resources for all the work that they do for the children.

John Gomez welcomed everyone to Tseshaht territory on behalf of chief and council and Usma Nuu-chah-nulth. He and Steve Howard then sang a welcome song to get things started.

The year 2015 marks the fifth year British Columbia has recognized Youth in Care week. Their goal is to use the week to reflect on the strengths, challenges and needs of each of the more than 8,000 children and youth in the care in British Columbia.

The staff at Usma celebrate the week by bringing the children back to the communities and reinforce their Nuu-chah-nulth culture through their participation in a variety of fun, interactive events.
