Third Annual golf tournament raises funds for Tlu-piich Games

Port Alberni

Cliff Atleo, president of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, welcomed participants to the third annual Tlu-piich Games fundraising golf tournament held Aug. 2 at the Alberni Golf Course.

He said the goal of the event was to support the young people who would take part in the fun, family-oriented Tlu-piich Games that are set to start on Aug. 7 with canoe races at 3 p.m. and opening ceremony and culture night at Maht Mahs gym at 7 p.m.

Atleo said he hoped that the golf tournament next year would be twice the size of this year’s, which had 10 teams competing for bragging rights.

Gathered were Nuu-chah-nulth leaders and their business partners for 18 holes of golf, a dinner and silent and live auction. Tseshaht came out in force to support the games. The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council sent representatives, and former Port Alberni mayor Ken McRae was in attendance.

Winning the event was Coast Mountain Construction with a score of 64. Players were Jim Jeffries, Doug Neff, Wayne Hawthornthwaite, and Mike Chayley.

Second place went to Herold Engineering Team 3 with a score of 65. Players were George Hrabowych, Keith Davies, Doug White and Charles Boyle.

Third place went to Tigh Na Mara with a score of 67. Players were Paul Drummond, Tavna Eden, Jim Hykaway, and Tauna Eden.

Men’s longest drive and closest to the pin went to Reg Young of Probyn Logging Ltd.

Tauna Eden of Tigh Na Mara earned the women’s longest drive award for her endeavors.

A mix up for the women’s closest to the pin award left organizers scratching their heads until a suggestion was made to put the names of the women participants into a hat and draw. Gina Pearson of Tseshaht got the hardware.

Kim Erickson of Hesquiaht performed auctioneering duties. She joked that her only qualification for the job was that she had watched Storage Wars on TV.

Helping over the day were Jessica Hamilton, the newly crowned Miss Nuu-chah-nulth, and her sister, the 2012 Youth Role Model Keanna Hamilton.
